Statement on House of Representatives Effort to Repeal the 40% Tax on Health Care Benefits
Mallory Micetich, a spokesperson for the National Coalition on Benefits, issued the following statement in response to the inclusion of a provision to repeal the 40 percent tax on health care benefits mandated by the Affordable Care Act in budget reconciliation legislation.
America’s employers, both large and small, appreciate House Ways and Means Chairman Paul Ryan for his leadership and the Ways and Means Committee for including a provision in budget reconciliation legislation to repeal the 40 percent excise tax on health care benefits scheduled to take effect in 2018.
Absent repeal, the 40 percent tax will slow private sector health care innovation and erode the value of the employer-sponsored health care benefits upon which more than 150 million Americans currently rely.
The National Coalition on Benefits strongly endorses repeal of the 40 percent tax on health care benefits. Well over half of the members of Congress, on both sides of the aisle, have cosponsored legislation to do away with this tax, and we urge them to continue to take actions on this issue that impacts the health care benefits for millions of Americans.
